NEW YORK'S SARATOGA SPRINGS -
In the $350,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at six furlongs on Saturday, Jackie's Warrior will be the overwhelming favorite to become the first horse to win a Grade 1 race at Saratoga in three straight years.
Both the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens and the Grade 1 Hopeful were won by Jackie's Warrior.
Only Heavenly Prize and Ginger Punch have taken home three Grade 1 prizes at Saratoga during the graded stakes period, but both of them did it in a single calendar year.
Sky Beauty won the Alabama in 1993 and Go for Wand in 1994 after being disqualified from first in the Grade 1 Spinaway in 1992.
Jackie's Warrior has won four races at Saratoga, including the Grade 2 Saratoga Special at age two and the Grade 2 Amsterdam at age three.
As fantastic a horse race as I've ever been involved in was his tight victory over Life Is Good in the Jerkens last year, according to Steve Asmussen, Jackie's Warrior's trainer and the all-time leader in victories with 9,847. (through Wednesday).
