Winner of the Del Mar Debutante, Bridlewood Farm and the Coolmore Partners’ Moonshine Memories extended her unbeaten record to three starts with a win in Saturday’s Grade 1 Chandelier at Santa Anita Park. The juvenile daughter of Malibu Moon, ridden by Flavien Prat at odds of 2-1, settled off the pacesetters and came with a run down the lane to win by about two lengths at the wire. Trained by Simon Callaghan, Moonshine Memories covered 1 1/16 miles over the fast main track in 1:46.32 to earn an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
Alluring Star, who took all the late money to go off as the favorite at 9-5, jumped out to take the lead right at the start of the Chandelier. Second-choice (2-1) Moonshine Memories was content to stalk from second position as Alluring Star gradually pulled away down the backstretch, eventually holding a three-length lead after fractions of :23.03 and :46.75.
Moonshine Memories came up to challenge Alluring Star in the far turn, and had a slight advantage at the head of the lane. Piedi Bianchi was trying to keep pace in third.
Prat shook the reins at Moonshine Memories and the filly responded willingly, pulling away from her rivals and continuing to widen her lead under steady urging. At the wire she was nearly two lengths in front of Alluring Star in second, while Piedi Bianchi held on for third over Dancing Belle.
Bred in Kentucky by Summer Wind Farm, Moonshine Memories was a $650,000 yearling purchase at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select sale. She broke her maiden at first asking, and took the Del Mar Debutante in her second career start. Moonshine Memories made the jump to two turns with ease in the Chandelier, and has now won all three of her starts for earnings of nearly $400,000.
