You do not need to master every statistic before using the reports. Follow these five steps and you will understand the basic process immediately.

Open the Correct Report

Confirm the track and date before reviewing any race.

Find the Exacta Players

These are the ranked horses that make up the recommended exacta box.

Note the Value Horse

When one qualifies, it is already inside the box and may add payout potential.

Check for Scratches

If a box horse scratches, use the designated Scratch Insurance horse.

Place the Box

Enter all listed Exacta Players in a full exacta box at a wager size that fits your bankroll.

First-day advice: Begin with the Exacta Players, the race rating, and the recommended box. The deeper horse-by-horse analysis will become even more valuable as you get familiar with the format.

What Is the Battaglia Exacta Engine?

It is a structured handicapping system built to identify the horses with the clearest path to finishing first or second—not merely one possible winner.

Every covered race is evaluated through traditional handicapping, horse-by-horse analysis, and AI-assisted data processing. The final report ranks the strongest exacta contenders, explains why they belong, and gives members a consistent way to structure the wager.

Every race follows the same basic format. Once you understand one output, you will know how to read the rest of the card.

The AI processes and compares the information. More than 40 years of handicapping experience helps determine what that information means.

Section 02

The Four Core Components of Every Race

These four elements tell you who belongs in the box, where the extra value may come from, and what to do if a late scratch changes the race.

Exacta Players Box

The core selections for the race. They are ranked from strongest to fourth strongest when four horses are used. Every horse in the box must have a realistic path to finishing first or second.

Important: The first-ranked horse is the strongest overall contender, but any listed Exacta Player can finish first or second.

Exacta Value Horse

A horse already inside the Exacta Players box with morning-line odds greater than 5-1 (6-1 or higher). It may appear anywhere in the rankings.

It is not a separate selection and it is not automatically the fourth horse. It is included because its price profile may improve the value of the exacta.

Scratch Insurance

One horse outside the Exacta Players box designated as the replacement if a box horse scratches.

If no Exacta Player scratches, the Scratch Insurance horse stays out of the recommended box.

Engine Logic and Analysis

The reasoning behind the selections, including pace, race shape, class, form cycles, trainer and jockey information, workouts, trips, surface, distance, and horse-by-horse strengths or concerns.

Horse-by-Horse Symbols Explained

The symbols let you understand each horse’s role at a glance. The written analysis then explains the reasoning behind the designation.

Exacta Player

Inside the recommended box. This horse has a realistic path to finishing first or second and should be boxed with the other Exacta Players.

Not in the Recommended Box

The complete profile did not earn a place among the final Exacta Players. The analysis explains the main concerns. No horse is incapable of outrunning an assessment, but this runner is not part of the recommended structure.

Exacta Value Horse

Already inside the Exacta Players box and carrying morning-line odds greater than 5-1. This is an additional value designation—not an extra horse outside the box.

Scratch Insurance

Outside the normal box. Move this horse into the box only when one of the listed Exacta Players is officially scratched.

Fringe Player

Has at least one legitimate angle worth discussing but does not have a strong enough complete profile to earn box inclusion. Fringe Players are included for transparency, not as recommended additions.

Field-Size Rules

The number of Exacta Players changes with field size. Smaller fields call for a tighter box. Larger fields create more legitimate exacta threats.

Scratch Insurance is always separate. It is never counted as one of the Exacta Players unless a listed box horse scratches and the insurance horse is activated as the replacement.

How to Bet the Selections

The standard Battaglia’s Picks approach is straightforward: box the listed Exacta Players. The box keeps every first-and-second combination among those horses covered.

Find the Exacta Players for the race.
Write down all listed program numbers. Use three, four, or five horses based on the field-size rule shown in the report.
Select “Exacta Box” at the window or in your wagering app.
Enter every Exacta Player number. Do not add the Scratch Insurance horse unless a listed Exacta Player has been scratched.
Choose the amount per combination.
A $1 four-horse box costs $12. Some tracks and wagering platforms offer a 50-cent minimum, which cuts the cost in half. Available minimums vary.
Check scratches and updates before post time.
When a box horse scratches, replace it with the designated Scratch Insurance horse and box the updated group.
Use a wager size that fits your bankroll.
The recommended structure is a box. Avoid increasing the size of the wager emotionally after a win or loss.

About the Exacta Value Horse: The value horse remains part of the normal box. Battaglia’s Picks does not require a separate key, wheel, part-wheel, or “on top” wager to use the report correctly.

How to Use Race Ratings

Race ratings help you understand the overall confidence and clarity of the setup—not whether a race is guaranteed to produce a winning exacta.

Stronger-Rated Races

The contenders and race shape are clearer. These races may deserve priority when deciding where to focus your bankroll.

Lower-Confidence or Chaotic Races

More uncertainty exists. A smaller wager or a pass may be appropriate depending on your bankroll and comfort level.

A race rating measures confidence in the overall analysis. It is not a promise that the exacta will hit.

Why Four Horses?

The race has ten runners, so the standard four-horse rule applies. The recommended $1 exacta box of 3–5–8–11 contains 12 combinations and costs $12.

What Does the Value Label Change?

Nothing about the basic structure. #11 is already in the box. The label tells you that the horse also meets the morning-line value requirement.

When Is #9 Used?

Only when one of #3, #8, #11, or #5 is scratched. For example, if #11 scratches, the updated box becomes 3–5–8–9.

What Should You Check Last?

Confirm scratches, final field status, current odds, and your total ticket cost before submitting the wager.

Section 08

Turf Races: Also Eligible, MTO and Off-Turf Changes

Also Eligible (AE)

An Also Eligible horse can draw into the main field when another horse scratches. The horse may be discussed in the analysis, but it should not be added to the box unless it officially draws into the race and an update warrants inclusion.

Main Track Only (MTO)

An MTO horse runs only when the race is moved from turf to the main track. MTO runners are not part of the regular turf box.

If Off Turf: When a report includes a separate off-turf section, use it only after the race has officially been moved to the main track. If the race stays on turf, use the regular turf selections.

A Recommended Race-Day Routine

Before the Card

Open the report for the correct track and date.
Review the race ratings and identify the strongest setups.
Note races with an Exacta Value Horse.
Decide your maximum bankroll before wagering begins.

Before Each Race

Check official scratches and the latest Battaglia’s Picks update.
Confirm every listed Exacta Player is still entered.
Activate Scratch Insurance only when needed.
Review current odds and confirm the wager fits your bankroll.

After Each Race

Record the wager amount and return.
Evaluate the full card rather than one isolated result.
Do not chase a loss or dramatically increase the next wager.

Delivery and Updates

Reports are delivered by 9:30 AM ET on covered race days.
Check your inbox, Promotions tab, and Spam folder.
Always use the most recent update before wagering.

First-day checklist: Correct track and date • Race rating reviewed • Exacta Players identified • Value Horse noted • Scratches checked • Ticket cost confirmed.

Section 10

Realistic Expectations and Responsible Play

A strong process still includes losing races and losing days. No handicapping service wins every race, and no result is guaranteed.

Some exactas will return less than the cost of a larger box.
Short-priced horses finishing first and second can produce modest payouts.
Results should be evaluated across many races and complete cards.
Do not chase losses or wager more than you can comfortably afford.
Past results do not guarantee future performance.
Battaglia’s Picks does not promise that members will earn a profit.

A BOOM Exacta is a $1 exacta returning at least $50. BOOM results are worth highlighting, but smaller exacta hits also matter. The objective is a disciplined, repeatable process—not chasing only the largest possible payout.

Professionally handicapping one complete race card takes many hours. We would rather provide deep, complete coverage of selected major meets than rushed selections for every track running that day.

Your Full Year Begins the Day You Join

The membership is not based on the calendar year and does not end on December 31.

Your membership runs for a full 12 months from your enrollment date. Joining during Saratoga does not mean your access ends when the meet or calendar year ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Exacta Players listed in order?

Yes. They are ranked from strongest to the final box horse. However, exactas require the first two finishers, so any listed Exacta Player can finish first or second.

Should I box every listed Exacta Player?

The standard recommendation is a full exacta box using every listed Exacta Player. Field size controls whether the report uses three, four, or five horses.

Is the Exacta Value Horse always the fourth-ranked horse?

No. It can appear anywhere inside the ranked box. The horse must have morning-line odds greater than 5-1 to qualify.

Does every race have an Exacta Value Horse?

No. The designation is used only when a horse inside the recommended box meets the value criteria.

Should I key or wheel the Exacta Value Horse?

No additional structure is required. The standard Battaglia’s Picks recommendation is to box all listed Exacta Players. The Value Horse is already included.

Why did an exacta return less than my total wager?

A four-horse box covers 12 combinations. When shorter-priced horses finish first and second, the payoff may be modest. Judge performance over a meaningful sample rather than one payout.

What happens when one of the box horses scratches?

Replace the scratched Exacta Player with the designated Scratch Insurance horse, then box the updated group.

Do you cover every racetrack?

No. Complete handicapping of one track takes many hours. Battaglia’s Picks concentrates on selected major meets to protect the depth and quality of the reports.

Are the selections guaranteed to win?

No. Horse racing always involves risk. Past results do not guarantee future performance.

When does my one-year membership expire?

Your membership runs for a full 12 months beginning on the date you enroll.
